One Iowa is calling upon Representative Dwayne Alons to correct untrue and irresponsible statements regarding the lives of gays and lesbians. Alons is the sponsor of House Joint Resolution 6, which seeks to ban any form of legal recognition for same sex couples, including the freedom to marry.

In a recent interview with Think Progress, Alons was asked about an Iowa Family Policy Center seminar that asserts that same sex marriage is more dangerous than smoking. The seminar relies on discredited reports from the 1980s claiming health risks and shorter life spans due to homosexuality. Authored by Dr. Mark Cameron, the report has been thoroughly discredited by the American Psychological Association and other professional organizations.

According to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Loving v. Virginia, marriage is “one of the ‘basic civil rights of man,’ fundamental to our very existence and survival.” This “basic civil right” is a unique legal and contractual relationship that bestows about 1,100 rights and obligations, including hospital visitation rights and tax benefits upon married individuals. Yet for years, these privileges, rights and benefits have been systemically denied on an unequal basis. Today, only five states and the District of Columbia recognize and perform marriages for same-sex couples; three more states, Maryland, New York and Rhode Island, recognize these marriages that are performed in other states.

Two new lawsuits, filed in Connecticut and New York, challenging the Defense of Marriage Act now offer the president a chance to put the government on the side of justice. We urge him to seize it when the administration files its response, which is due by March 11. The executive branch’s duty to defend federal laws is not inviolate. This one’s affront to equal protection is egregious.

Since I got married, my parents have “come out” to select friends. Not “my daughter is gay” but “My daughter got married [deep breath] to a very nice woman.” Apparently, marriage is something you shouldn’t hide.

In my four years in California, it was illegal to marry the love of my life, then legal for one summer, then illegal again. Now that we’re Maryland residents, we’re in legal limbo. The attorney general says our marriage may be recognized. Does that mean we can we file our state taxes jointly, or hold title on our new house as a married couple? Nobody knows.

Last week, a marriage equality bill was introduced in the Maryland Senate. It would provide my family with the legal clarity and recognition that most married couples take for granted. Will it pass? Will it be challenged by voter referendum? When will we get to be equal?

Last year, after I accepted a job in the Washington area, I flew out to house-hunt with my mom’s help. As we drove down Blair Road, snaking back and forth between the District and Maryland, I watched the GPS switch back and forth. “Look, Ma! I’m married … now I’m not … Hey, I’m married again!”

She turned in the driver’s seat. “Jane Rebecca, don’t joke about a thing like that. You are married. You had a beautiful wedding. I was there.”

Mike Gronstal and Terry Branstad offer a startling contrast in leadership. Gronstal explains the role of the Senate majority leader, identifies how he will fulfill that responsibility and articulates a clear rationale for his decisions. Gronstal is unwavering on principle and accepts full accountability for his actions.

The only opinion of substance Branstad offers is that the Varnum decision was a mistake. However, he does not outline why on a constitutional basis it was a mistake.

My conscience tells me that if I’m a vegetarian waitress in a meat-serving restaurant, I shouldn’t have to serve the customer who orders steak. So I’m going to lobby the Legislature to create a conscience clause exempting waiters from serving certain foods.

Your conscience might dictate that if you’re a day-care worker who believes children should be raised only in two-parent households, you won’t deal with children of divorce. You could seek a legislative exemption from having to.

There are special privileges for married couples. For example, married people pay less in state taxes if they file separately on a single tax return. If a person works for an employer that helps cover health care for family, married people pay less. If the Iowa Code were analyzed, I have no doubt that many special privileges for married couples would be found.

Are heterosexual married couples willing to give up all special privileges so the state can discriminate against same-sex married couples?
